What is Restitution?

  • Restitution is a process where we teach children to figure out why they acted the way they did, and what they could do better next time.

  • Also that it is okay to make mistakes, but we must take responsibility for and fix those mistakes.

  • Restitution Works To Create the Conditions For the Person To Fix their Mistake, To Return to the Group Strengthened And Together, to Celebrate the Learning

  • Everyone leaves with their dignity intact

How to Avoid Debate and Excuses

  • Say “Thank you, I appreciate it.”

  • By stating the rule in the positive, the child remains on the success side and less likely to act out or withdraw. We do not need to chastise them about breaking the rule, they already know that.

  • The question is . . . can he or she change their behavior?
